Bet Hockey – The Best of the Rest

After a flurry of activity during the free agency period, NHL general managers have settled into their “fishing trip” or “take the kids to Disney World” phase. Activity has died down significantly, but those who bet hockey know there are still some useful names out there who could have major impacts.

One that comes to mind is Alex Tanguay. He’s a soft player and he can’t carry a team but he’s a great complementary offensive piece who can play on the first line. It’s intriguing to hear that the Islanders are coveting him, as he could mesh well with John Tavares.

An obvious name is Mats Sundin. While he’s clearly lost a step, he could still flourish if placed in the right situation to become a turret on the power play. Detroit just lost Hossa – why not replace him on the power play with Mats? He’d surely mesh with all those Swedes. If not Sundin, Detroit could try employing Petr Sykora in a similar role.

Sticking with the veteran theme – what about Sergei Zubov? He’s broken down, yeah, but he can still absolutely run a power play when he plays. If the Leafs trade Tomas Kaberle, they could try to sign the slick-skating Zubov on the cheap to fill the void.

A lot can still happen this summer, so keep your ear to the ground if you bet hockey.
